A BRIEF HISTORY

The Calvary Baptist Church was founded in 1846 – fourteen years after the death of Sam Sharpe - as a result of disagreements among members in the Burchell Baptist Church where National Hero Sam Sharpe was a deacon.

The church which was originally known as Second Baptist or Little Baptist had among its membership the daughter and grand-daughter of Sam Sharpe.

The name of the church was changed to "Calvary"during the ministry of the Rev. Sydney H. Helwig who assumed the pastorate of the church in 1940.

The church which was sited at Market Street was relocated to its present location at Corinaldi Avenue on September 20, 1979. The Education Centre, phase one of the relocation process, was used for worship until the sanctuary was completed and dedicated on September 20, 1984.

 Over time the church has grown spiritually, missionally and numerically. A strong subscriber to the concept of intergal mission, the church has been faithful to the great commission through maintaining a healthy balance between evangelism and christian social action. Therefore, we celebrate the existence of an efficient administrative structure, social outreach ministry, church growth emphasis, youth, young adult and children’s ministries as well as a strong focus on spiritual disciplines. At every stage of the historic evolution of the Calvary church, the members have played a significant role through their sacrificial giving and service. To God be the Glory!!
